Iraqi Trade Minister Atheer Daoud visited Bühler’s headquarters in Switzerland to review progress on a project to build five grain storage silos in Iraq. Accompanied by the director general of the General Company for Grain Trading, the minister examined the project being carried out by Bühler to strengthen the country’s grain storage capacity and food security.
The project covers five Iraqi provinces: Najaf, Anbar, Muthanna, Wasit and Kirkuk, with one silo planned for each province. Its intended contribution is additional storage infrastructure across these locations, although the resulting increase in capacity will depend on the facilities’ specifications and their entry into operation.

The ministerial review places attention on project delivery. For grain storage operations, the practical benefit would come when completed facilities can receive and hold grain. Progress toward construction and operational readiness therefore matters more to the project’s immediate impact than the review visit alone.
The project’s food security objective should also be distinguished from its eventual results. Additional storage could support grain availability by increasing the capacity to hold supplies, but the scale of that contribution will depend on usable capacity, operating arrangements and how the silos connect with grain intake and distribution. Further project updates detailing completion milestones, storage capacity and commissioning would provide a clearer basis for assessing when these benefits could emerge.
