EU agri-food imports fell in August 2026, bringing the year-to-date decline to 4% compared with the same period a year earlier, according to World Grain. Cereal imports fell 10% to €5.48 billion, driven mainly by lower wheat imports.

The figures point to a sharper decline in the value of cereal imports than in overall agri-food imports. Wheat is central to that change, although the reported values alone do not establish how much of the decline reflects changes in import volumes or prices.
For grain buyers and suppliers, the development raises questions about how demand for imported wheat may evolve. The longer-term effect on trade flows will depend in part on whether the decline continues in subsequent reporting periods.
